２０１４年３月、The Volvo Concept Estate として、Volvo のニュープラットフォーム＆デザインが使用された、コンセプトカーのプロモが YouTube 上にアップされました。
Volvo に興味のない人にとっては、なんの変哲もないただのコンセプトカーだったと思いますが、世界中の Volvo ファンはこれまでにない刷新されたデザインに衝撃を受けました。
これまでとは異なる丸みを帯びたデザイン、他車メーカーには見られない T 字型ヘッドライト（トールハンマー）、北欧デザインを思い起こさせる内装、などなどとにかく驚かされました。
「Volvo が変わった」
Geely との経営統合で Volvo 復活を予感させる、素晴らしいプロモでした。
一方、このプロモは音楽好き、特に北欧ミュージックラバーの間でも話題になりました。挿入歌 “Mermaid” を歌う Be The Bear という当時あまり知られていないアーティストの存在があったからです。
Volvo Concept Estate の洗練されたデザインに、スウェーデンの厳しい冬の情景、そこに品を保ちながらも気持ちの高ぶりを表現する Mermaid が非常に良くマッチし、僕は Be The Bear を即鬼検索しました。

病に苦しむ友人のためにつくられた歌
「どこで買えばいいの？」
「いつ発売？」
と、多くの人から SNS 上で聞かれるほど人気の曲となりました。僕もその一人です。
この５年間彼女（Be The Bear）は
「あと少し」
「本当にすぐリリースするから」
と先延ばしし続け、
「This will never come（どうせリリースしないんでしょ）」
と最近では皮肉られるほど、延ばしに延ばしまくっていたので、突然のリリースは本当に驚きました。無論即買いです。
ところでつい最近、この歌にまつわるエピソードがあるインタビューで公開されました。この歌は精神病に苦しむ彼女の友人のために作られた歌で、こう説明しています。
“‘Mermaid’ is about a specific event in my life when a friend was in a mental hospital, writing it was my way of dealing with the situation, and saying I was there. So, yeah, it’s a pop song about mental illness, but it’s also just a love song for someone close to me. I think it’s important that we talk about mental illness and end the taboo around it since it doesn’t help the people involved at all. I named it ‘Mermaid’ because it reminds me of the imagery from H.C. Andersen’s Danish folktale, the original ‘Little Mermaid.’ Did you know, in the original story she sacrificed herself for love, and ended up becoming a whisper on the wind? Mermaids don’t have eternal souls, but she finds out how she can acquire one, and spends 300 years doing good deeds with other ‘Daughters of the Air.’”
翻訳がそんなに得意ではないので（今僕（Tada）が喋ってます）伝わるか分かりませんが、とにかく僕が思っていたただのアップテンポな歌ではなく、大切な友人を支える（音楽を愛する）彼女なりの表現だったんだと分かりました。
５年もリリースまでに時間がかかったのは、様々なことが関係していたんだと容易に想像出来ます。
そうとも知らず「ねーねー、いつリリースするの〜？」と Be The Bear さんにメッセージを送った自分を今恥に恥じています。
